Wiener sausages, or hot dogs, derive their name from the city of Vienna, Austria, which is known as Wien (pronounced "VEEN") in German. The term “wiener” (pronounced as “VEE-ner” in English) is a nod to their place of origin. In Vienna, sausages known as Wiener Würstchen were traditionally made from a blend of pork and beef.
The story goes that European immigrants brought their sausage-making traditions to the United States in the 19th century, where they became a popular street food. The addition of the bun was an American innovation that helped prevent people from burning their hands on the hot sausage.
Over time, “wiener” became synonymous with what we now call the hot dog, especially in regions influenced by Germanic culture.
